Recent Faves

I have been on the hunt for a perfect nude nail polish for years! My pick: Essie in #690, Not Just a Pretty Face. It's perfect on fingers and toes as a light, finished look. Plus, it's no-fuss and low-maintenance: any chips or imperfections are masked by the perfect nude color, so it's longer-wearing than the white/pink sheers that I normally gravitate towards as a little-color option.

My favorite lip balm is Nivea A Kiss of Moisture. It is so incredibly emollient and luxurious! Highly recommended. I carry them in all my purses and keep them stashed around my apartment. It even looks good on its own as for a shiny, clear, full look.

I love Finnish brand Lumene, available in the US at CVS. I loved their Matt Touch toner, which I haven't been able to find. My replacement of choice is Lumene Radiant Touch Moisturizing Toner. I used to believe I didn't want a moisturizing toner, but it really does brighten the face and noticeably clean off daily build-up that can't be cleaned off with face wash alone.

Getting Cheeky

A little bit of blush goes a long way. Cheek color is one of the most important parts of any cosmetic regimen: it immediately brightens the face and obviates the need for heavy makeup elsewhere. Unless your skin has a natural rosiness, blush is vital even as part of a daily makeup routine because it allows you to achieve the flushed, better-version-of-yourself look that makeup is supposed to produce, without requiring very many products or very much time.

If you're wearing blush, you may find that you end up needing less concealer, less bronzer, and less eye makeup, even for a big night out. Blush can even mask redness and imperfections, leaving you free from thick foundation and concealer. I like to apply blush early on in my routine so that I can see just how much of everything else I need to use.

Blush literally makes you glow, and you'll notice the difference when you see yourself in the mirror or see a picture of yourself. Many people say they prefer bronzer, believing that blush is outdated or that being tan is the ultimate goal, but bronzer without blush, like foundation without blush, is suboptimal. You will look much healthier if you highlight the apples of your cheeks with a little pink or peach color, bringing out your cheekbones and lighting up your entire face. If you must bronze in conjunction, do a light bronze all over your face and apply blush as you normally would over it. It's a misconception that bronzer/blush is an either/or decision.

The bottom line is that blush is a staple product that no one should go without; my daily routine is this: tinted moisturizer, concealer if necessary, a little mascara, and a little blush. On a weekend if I'm running errands, blush over bare skin is just enough that I feel like I made some effort. I'll go ahead and share some of my favorite blushes with you.

L'Oreal Feel Naturale Blush in Charmed Peach applies smoothly and provides just the right amount of coverage. It's almost impossible to over-apply the sheer peach color, and the texture is a soft and silky. The brush that comes with the compact is squared and luxe, and much thicker than typical compact brushes. It's perfect for applying blush on the go. At home, however, I like to use a regular blush brush for all my powder blushes for maximum precision and control.

Peach blush is universally flattering, and another one I love is Revlon A Floral Affair Sheer Powder Blush in Peachy Keen. This one is a palette of three different peachy colors, so the finish is natural, and it has a little sheen to it. I first purchased it as a replacement for a former favorite of mine that was unexpectedly discontinued, and I went back and bought a few extras since I loved it so much (and since it's a limited edition -- I couldn't have a new favorite disappear just as suddenly as my previous favorite had disappeared). The slim size of the compact makes it portable, but it doesn't come with a mirror or a brush.

A newer favorite of mine is cheek stain. I love Tarte Cheek Stain in both Dollface (a baby doll pink) and Tipsy (a glowing peach), which both have just a hint of shimmer. Since it's a gel blush, everyone can use it, and it's oil-free and alcohol-free, leaving your pores clear and your skin hydrated. The key with cheek stain is to blend well. Whether you apply directly to your cheeks like I do or whether you use a sponge or your fingertips, if you don't blend, you just might end up looking like a clown. Apply to your cheekbone, from the apples of your cheeks toward your ear, and soften the edges with your fingertips until they disappear. The flush is so natural and lasts all day. The other thing I love about this cheek stain is that it makes a great lip color as well! Just swipe across lips and you're done. It's so easy to use and comes in tons of shades at select Sephora locations.

I'll tell you one more favorite, but it's not for wallflowers or the fair weather blush lover -- M.A.C. Powder Blush in Exhibit A. This one is a truly smashing tomato red sheer powder. If you have trouble avoiding looking like a clown in the gels and peaches, then this one probably isn't for you. Exhibit A is dangerously easy to over-apply, and you need a light hand to get optimal results. I like to tap a lot of the excess powder off the brush before even touching my cheeks; you can always build, but it's much harder to take off blush. The color lasts for hours and brightens your whole face, and women of all skin tones, with the right tools and right touch, can make this shade work for them. A fantail brush or a brush made specifically for blush are your best options for brushes. I usually reserve this color for nights out when I'm wearing dark or drab clothes, when it can provide the maximum punch without looking like it's too much. A little trick to bring out green or hazel eyes for a smokey-eyed night out is to use this blush as an eyeshadow. First apply your smokey-eye dark brown, graphite, or green-black color as you normally would, then use an eyeshadow brush to apply just a little Exhibit A as a highlighter so that it's not even really visible when your eyes are open. A real professional (like my little) can do it way better than I can, but it's a great trick if you can make it work for you.

Have I convinced you that blush is not only essential but also incredible and versatile? I hope so. And I hope you make blush an exciting part of your routine and have as much fun with it as I do!

Cuticle Cure

I can't stop looking for products that enhance the appearance and strength of my nails. Nail Magic remains a staple, so when I was home in DC last weekend, I stopped by Sally Beauty Supply to restock. Of course, I ended up looking for other nail-related products as well and came across this amazing cuticle cream, Hoofer's Choice Nail and Cuticle Cream by European Secrets. I was initially enticed by the name, carried it around the store in my basket, became a little skeptical, put it back, went to check out, and ran back to grab it at the very last second. I somehow knew that the $3 I was going to spend was a risk well worth taking. Boy am I glad I did! I don't know the product's back story, but I think anything that purports to help condition even a horse's hoof is a product that will work wonders for a human nail.

It is amazing. After a week of using it, my formerly dry, noticeably flaky cuticles are smooth, hydrated, and intact. If you recall from my post below, one of the major drawbacks about Nail Magic is that it zaps the cuticles dry, almost to the point where they are painful. A perfect product to cure the dryness had thus far eluded me. With Hoofer's Choice, my cuticles are no longer cracked and no longer require regular maintenance with cuticle nippers, even while using Nail Magic. The rough spot on my third knuckle (developed as a result of apparently gripping my pen really hard, since we're not allowed to use computers in most of my classes) is no longer cracked and white, but healthier and healing, blending in with my skin. I have fewer hangnails, and most excitingly, my nails feel even stronger than they did with Nail Magic alone. Using the two in conjunction seems to be the true recipe for fabulous, peel-free, strong nails. Applying a coat of strengthening product is a vital component of the regimen, but to optimally fuse the layers, nails must be well-hydrated, which was a result that I had thus far been unable to achieve with other hand creams, cuticle oils, and cuticle waxes (and believe me, I have been scouring the market). Hoofer's Choice is the real deal, and my quest for the perfect complement to Nail Magic is over. I recommend applying to nails and cuticles at nighttime, on bare nails or over polish.

A final word about older posts. I feel compelled to note, far overdue, that the three mascaras I wrote about some time ago are no longer my favorites, with the exception of my old faithful, the Almay One Coat Lengthening. The Clinique and Max Factor are still fine mascaras, but there are others that are better for one reason or another. Since I am averse to editing old posts (for the sake of posterity), I have to just put it out there in the cosmos that I no longer support the mascaras I previously endorsed. Similarly, the Cover Girl Advanced Radiance tinted moisturizer that I once wrote about is no longer in existence, and even before it was discontinued, I had an epiphany wherein I realized that the original formula, the Cover Girl CG Smoothers, was far superior anyway. It's oil free! I will update about current mascaras later.

Amazing Nails

Well, this update certainly is long overdue. I've developed a whole new beauty regimen since I last posted, but I'll have to discuss that later. This post will be about an amazing nail hardener that I recently discovered! It's simply called "Nail Magic," and it lives up to its name and certainly exceeds my low expectations, which are the result of an endless string of disappointing so-called strengthening products.

I purchased Nail Magic a few months ago at Sally Beauty Supply but stashed it away and forgot about until two weeks ago. For the past couple of months, I've become really lazy about polishing my nails, so I've found that a few coats of clear polish on buffed nails is my staple look. Up until I rediscovered my new bottle of Nail Magic in my nail polish box, I had been regularly switching between two Sally Hansen clear strengthening treatments. When I switched to Nail Magic, the difference was almost immediate! My nails are prettier, stronger, and whiter than ever before!

The only time I got comparable results was when using a three-part system from QVC.com, Pro Strong or something, which worked very well but was expensive, time consuming, and cumbersome, not to mention that it required bare nails for optimal performance. Nail Magic, however, serves as a clear polish, a base coat, and a top coat, so you can wear it alone or with polish and achieve the same results!

Many people know that my obsession with polish and perfect-looking (key word: looking) nails stems partly from my trouble with my nails -- weak, peeling nails, aggravated by my habit of splitting them further for fun or out of boredom. A recipe for thin, weak nails that can't grow too long. I've realized that at the least, I need a clear coat on my nails at all times not simply to give the appearance of nice nails, but especially to prevent such destructive behavior; hence the clear Sally Hansen products. Unfortunately, the superficial protection and cosmetic effect seem to be the only discernable benefit of the Sally Hansen products. The Nail Magic is the best of all worlds, because it's a protective layer to prevent me from picking at any peels, a mask for any existing flaws, AND the kicker -- a successful hardener that penetrates the entire nail. Today when I removed my polish to reapply it fresh, I noticed fewer peels, and the few there were were much harder to split (yes, I admit it, I attempted -- I had to test it!). All of which leads me to believe that while my nails look glossy and natural during my daily routine, the Nail Magic is secretly working overtime to fuse the layers of my nails together!

I will mention a few drawbacks about this product. First, the instructions are careful to note that it is to be applied on nails only, not on skin, not under the nail, and only at a certain frequency. After a few weeks of use, I can see why: my cuticles have gotten slightly dry, creating a few painful and annoying hangnails. I will definitely begin using cuticle oils and creams from here on out (which I should be doing anyway) to prevent any further damage while I use Nail Magic.

Second, this product contains formaldehyde, which might be the cause of the above phenomenon. I read an article in Allure a while back about how terrible formaldehyde can be in hair and nail treatments. The highlighted cases of potentially fatal (!) exposure to toxic beauty products seemed to be a result of illicit importation or idiotic usage, but just because Nail Magic is available at Sally Beauty Supply doesn't mean it's completely safe. I know formaldehyde is found in other more common polishes and treatments, so I think the key is being aware of how much of it you're exposing yourself to. I will definitely be careful with the fumes and application, including taking care not to over-apply and making sure never to apply it in an enclosed space.

Enjoy, and report back with any comments!

The Perfect Planner

It's a new year, and I am going to diverge from my regular makeup posts to share one of my all-time favorite items: my planner. Planners in general are somewhat of a passion of mine. I eagerly anticipate each new year because it means a fresh start in a brand new planner, often with a predetermined color scheme. Each year, starting as early as August, I search high and low for The Perfect Planner. I do online research, visit stores, and take all options on the market into account before making a purchase. I am pretty discriminating; I won't use just anything, and I have certain features that I'm looking for. For three years running, the same planner has emerged as the clear winner, even though each year I do a fresh, diligent search of everything available. Since 2006, I have been using a Gallery Leather Weekly Desk calendar.

I love a weekly format, and I do not like formats that confine you to keeping a schedule with numbered timeslots or that split the day into two columns (two columns would only be helpful if I was using one side for timeslots, which I wouldn't do). I need plenty of blank space for each day, since I use my planner not only for appointments but also to keep a record of my activities after the fact. It has proved helpful a number of times to be able to look back and know exactly what I was doing on a given day -- without my records, I think the weeks and months would slip by in a soon-forgotten blur. I have done this for years, since long before I discovered my current planner, and it's so nice to pull out an old planner and peruse my goings-on. I also look for a monthly calendar section, which I enjoy using to document larger events such as trips, holidays, birthdays, and other major events of note (of course, I also note those in the weekly section as well -- it's nice to have them laid out in a consolidated spread too). I look for a substantial Notes section, so that I can list doctors' information, easily-forgotten account numbers (not passwords!), packing lists for trips, pool hours in case I feel like going for a swim, and more. I enjoy having a section of information such as area codes, time zones, dialing codes, and toll free numbers. Although I don't often use that section, when I need it, it's invaluable. Enticingly, my planner of choice added a color maps section for 2008, which, although it won't be used on a regular basis, definitely adds some excitement. The beautiful leather cover, brown ribbon bookmark, and gold edges are a fabulous final touch.

In 2006 I wrote in my orchid pink planner with only a pink Pilot V5 pen. In 2007 I chose an eggplant purple planner and wrote only in black Pilot V5 and black Pilot VBall grip. Pilot rollerball pens, clearly, are my favorites. This year I have just started using a bright apple green planner, but I'm trying something new and writing with a rainbow of colors, with felt-tip pens -- namely, the PaperMate Flair, an old classic. I have already begun to fill my planner, and I am excited to write more with each coming day!

The picture I am posting is a classic brown because that is the clearest picture I could find, and I'm including a picture of the interior format. I can no longer find the green I chose on the Barnes & Noble website, which must mean it was popular! Below are links to a bright pink one from B&N and the pictured brown one from Crane. It comes in a wide variety of colors, but I'm not sure what the availability is anymore, since both Crane and B&N are sold out of many of the colors they previously had. The Gallery Leather website, strangely, has said "Our website is coming soon" for at least two years, by my count. This year, I gave the planner to three family members as Christmas gifts after all the compliments I received on mine, and at least one other friend has chosen the same planner for herself. It's truly The Perfect Planner.

Defined Brows

Good eyebrow definition is often neglected. It really is an underappreciated realm of the makeup world. Everyone should be aware that a little attention to brows can change the way your entire face looks. Regular brow shaping is a must: plucking at a minimum, but preferably waxing by a professional. After you have nicely shaped brows, it is not necessarily enough to leave them alone. My eyebrows are light brown like my hair, and without definition, they can look unkempt or even washed out. A foolproof combination of bare-minimum weekend makeup is this: a little light powder to even out any imperfections, a swipe of lip product, and well-defined brows. My all-time favorite brow definer is Maybelline Ultra-Brow Brush-On Color in light brown. I know I've been tough on Maybelline in the past, but I've owned this for years and have yet to run out of my first package, and I even keep a second at work. The color is a perfect soft medium brown for the lighter brunette, defining my eyebrows just a bit without looking painted on, and the powder is preferable to a wax or clear mascara in my opinion. My only complaint is that you might need to buy a better quality application brush; the brush that came with my original purchase is perfect and soft, but the one I keep at work has a harder brush that is difficult to use. I recommend a thicker angled brush, which will allow you to apply the powder to the entire width of the brow at once. I like to start on the inner side of the brow and lightly dab outwards. When I'm short on time, I've found that defining my brows takes me from looking like I just woke up to looking manicured and pulled-together, and I would even go so far as to claim that I feel naked without it when I go to an event. I am trying a new thing where I often (not every day, but many) give my eyelashes a rest from mascara and save it for special occasions, so I only put on a light sweep of natural eyeshadow today, no eyeliner, no mascara. Instead, I defined my brows just a bit, and it immediately brought out my eyes. I went from unkempt makeupless to daytime chic in seconds!

Ultimate Eyeliner

Who thinks it's time for an update? I do! If you love defining your eyes, I have the product you have been searching for. Prestige Cosmetics Kohl Eyeliner in Black-Brown, color E-24, is a staple that has been in my makeup bag for years. I carry one in my purse, keep one at my house, and have a new one stored away just in case. This eyeliner goes on like silk, sharpens easily and without breaking, and is perfectly dramatic for both daily wear and nights out. It's so easy to control the application, too. The key is the color -- Black-Brown. I own the same pencil in plain Black, which is a little softer kohl and thus smudgier. The Black can be good on the upper lid for smoky eyes, but it's much less suitable for lower lids -- dark eyeliner circles under your eyes are never good. I also own some brighter colors like turquoise and green, which are fun sometimes, but which do not apply as smoothly since they are a little harder. Black-Brown is the perfect balance of smooth application and non-goopy structure. I use Black-Brown on one or both lids depending on the effect I'm going for. I'll share another secret of my eye makeup application as well. I apply this liner to the inner rim of my eye, between my eyelashes and the eye itself. The true measure of a liner is whether it applies smoothly to that rim, since it's moister than below the lash line, and Black-Brown passes the test. It's true that any liner applied there fades faster because it gets more blinking action than below the lash line, but if you carry this pencil with you for bathroom touchups on the go, you will not regret employing my technique. I define both lids to the inner corner for a highly dramatic look, or perform a light sweep for a more casual look. The important thing to remember when applying liner so close to the eye is to keep this pencil sanitary, sharpen it often, and no not share it. Enjoy and give me feedback!
